What a FLASH Ball Mount Can Do For You
Ball mounts are the essential link between your tow vehicle and trailer. Their primary function is to hold the hitch ball securely and provide a solid, stable connection point for your trailer’s coupler. When inserted into the hitch receiver, the ball mount allows the trailer to pivot and follow your vehicle smoothly. They come in various configurations – fixed or adjustable height and with different drop or rise measurements – to help ensure the trailer rides level with the towing vehicle. A properly leveled trailer improves towing control and reduces wear on tires and suspension. Ball mounts are built to handle specific weight ratings (called GTW – Gross Trailer Weight and TW – Tongue Weight), so they’re a critical part of safe towing. For light to moderate loads, such as utility trailers, small campers or boats, a standard ball mount is often all you need. It’s job is to securely transfer the trailer’s tongue weight straight onto the rear of the tow vehicle without any extra complexity or moving parts.
What Ball Mounts Can’t Do For You
Despite being crucial for towing, ball mounts are not designed to manage weight distribution or trailer sway. They simply carry the tongue weight directly onto the vehicle’s rear suspension, which can cause problems if you’re hauling a heavier load. In short, while ball mounts are great for basic towing, they offer no corrective measures for handling or stability issues caused by heavy trailers.
