The Fleein Cray, originally designed by James Hughes, is a highly realistic swimming crayfish pattern specifically engineered to fool picky smallmouth and largemouth bass. Hughes spent over two years perfecting the design to mimic the specific, erratic way a crayfish darts away in a straight line when threatened. Unlike traditional crayfish flies that rely on heavy lead to sink, this pattern features a trimmed brush head that creates water resistance and “dig,” giving the fly a unique side-to-side swimming action. To fish it effectively, use an intermediate line and a series of energetic, intermittent sharp strips on a 45-degree angle downstream to maximize its “drunken” swimming motion. The fly’s construction also includes UV-coated mallard flanks for durability and an internal rattle to ensure it attracts attention in even the murkiest water.
