Description
A SMITH RIVER ORIGINAL
If there were ever a one-fly competition on Montanas Smith River (and there never will be), the Crazy Goof would be the clear choice. Born in the cabins of the Gruel Ranch near Franhaufers and refined through decades of riverbank tinkering, this pattern is part history, part experiment, and all fish catcher.
Passed down through generations of Smith River anglers, the Crazy Goof started as a dry flybut like most great patterns, it evolved. Over the years, countless variations emerged: weighted versions for nymphing, bead heads for swing rigs, and endless color tweaks. Yet one truth held steadyyellow always ruled the Smith.
What sets the Crazy Goof apart is its balance of buoyancy and movement. The elk hair tail traps air, keeping the rear of the fly riding high, while the chenille underbody absorbs just enough water to dip the fly into the surface film. The front hackle sags slightly, imitating spent wings or a struggling insectperfect for those days when trout are feeling curious rather than selective. The result? A durable, versatile pattern that looks like nothing in particular but works like everything that matters.
Whether youre fishing it dry, slightly sunk, or swung through a soft seam, the Crazy Goof has a knack for convincing Smith River trout (and plenty elsewhere) to make bad decisions.
